The Story

About Us

The orchestra was founded by Judith Hamza in L’Aquila, Italy, in June 2007. It was intended as a collaborative environment for young musicians and renowned professionals. It has so far given over 130 concerts, alongside international artists such as Ruggero Allifranchini, Fabio Bagnoli, Lucio Dalla, Enrico Dindo, Maria Fabiani, Cecilia Gasdia, Oscar Ghiglia, Massimo Giorgi, Carlo Goldstein, Vanni Moretto, Angelo Persichilli, Marco Rogliano and Massimo Spadano. Particularly important has been a series of recitals with soprano Gemma Bertagnolli and a partnership with violinist and musicologist Alberto Sanna.

The orchestra’s repertoire encompasses seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music as well as contemporary compositions – some especially written for the ensemble. Members of the orchestra are often asked to perform solo parts, for which they have earned considerable appreciation from the public and the critics alike.

The ensemble has been invited to contribute to the Zilele Muzicale International Festival in Târgu Mureș (Romania), the Stagione Amici della Musica in Empoli and in Lucca, the Musicantica Festival in Trento, the Baroque Festivals of Ancona, Bolzano and Rome, that of the Collegio Musicale San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi in Rome, and the Cornerstone Arts Festival in Liverpool. The orchestra also features regularly in numerous concert seasons, including those of the Società dei Concerti ‘B. Barattelli’ in L’Aquila, the Associazione Harmonia Novissima at the Teatro dei Marsi in Avezzano and the Società Filarmonica Ascolana. It has performed in prestigious venues such as the Aula Magna of the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’, the Lauro Rossi Theatre in Macerata, the Gonfalone Oratorio and the Auditorium of the St Cecilia Conservatoire in Rome, the Teatro della Pergola in Florence and the Capstone Theatre in Liverpool (both on its own and in collaboration with Tarang, The UK's national ensemble for Indian music).

In June 2009, the Italian music journal Amadeus devoted considerable attention to the work of Gli Archi de Cherubino. The online cultural promoter U-Sophia has also broadcast several concerts and interviews. In 2011 the group collaborated with the Roman vocal ensemble Festina Lente. In the same year, a concert featuring the ensemble, originally part of the Beethoven Festival, was broadcast by both Radio Vaticana and the BBC. Recently, the orchestra also participated in one of TV2000’s cultural shows.

The ensemble was presented with the key to the City of L’Aquila in recognition of its commitment to the city’s cultural revival in the aftermath of the 2009 earthquake. In 2012 the ensemble received a similar recognition of merit from the President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano.
